The Mass of Pope John Paul II in Rural America
A photographic record of the visit of Pope John Paul II to Des Moines, Iowa in October 1979, available for the first time since the original publication in 1979.
Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) was the first non-Italian Pope since 1523. His 27 years as pontiff included the breaking down of the Berlin Wall and the fall of Communism. On one of his first trips as Pope, John Paul II visited rural America, celebrating Mass at Living History Farms in Des Moines, Iowa, on October 4, 1979. “Pilgrimage” was first published shortly after that visit. The first edition, long out of print, has been reproduced here with additional materials as a memorial to a beloved Pope John Paul II.
